How-to to run a software consulting business

Managing project flow

by shabda on October 16, 2011

If you are not proactively managing your projects you risk them going awry.

# Talk to clients at least one every week
# Talk to your team at least once every two days to ensure that progress is being made.
# Have clear guidelines on what is progress. This needs to be clarified by you, your team and your clients.
# The specification is broken in tasks/tickets. A ticket is a unit of work which should not take longer than a day.
# Tasks are attached to milestones. A milestone should be about two weeks in length.
# A milestone should be dated. (To be done by XXYYZZ date). If you miss your milstone, adjust successive milestone. Do analysis of why the milestone date was missed and take action. (Do you always underestimate. Does a given team member always misses milestones? Does a client always add scope leading to missed milestones)
